Saiunkoku Monogatari

Tale of Saiunkoku:

What is it?

Definitely shoujo.

What does it include:
One female main character, and erm.... a bunch of male characters...... Well.... if you have ever seen Fushigi Yuugi or Harukanaru Toki no Naka de, then you can chalk this one up with them as well.

However, there's something much more appealing about this show that Fushigi Yuugi and Haruka don't have. And that is simply, the main female character isn't a ditzy selena-from-sailor-moon type character that colours so many of the other medieval stories. Here's a short synopsis:

Kou Shuurei always wanted to become a Court Official in the kingdom of Saiunkoku. So ever since she was young, she spent a lot of time and energy studying. When she realized that women were not allowed to take the Imperial Examination, she became a teacher of young children in a nearby temple. While technically considered a noble family, it is only by name, for her family is very poor that she and Seiran, a mysterious boy who Shuurei's father had taken in 13 years ago, have to always find odd jobs here and there. Her fate changed however, when one of the three grand masters of the imperial court, came to her house with a proposition. She would be paid 500 gold coins if she would enter the emperor's harem as a concubine....

EXCEPT. The reason is that ever since the emporer came into power half a year ago, he has not done any governing and it is merely by luck and the work of the ministers that his reign has not been overthrown. Her job is to convince him to resume his office. Plus, it is widely rumoured that the emporer is rather interested in men.....

Thus begins the tale of saiunkoku, where we follow a very colourful cast of characters through hardships, ploys, and betrayals. Politics plays a large part of this story, all inclusive with political assinations and assasins working in the shadows. Shuurei works hard to get the emporer to resume office and at the same time, finds herself closer and closer to achieving her dream to become a Court Official.

*drumroll please*

Saiunkoku is VASTLY entertaining, and includes many endearing characters that its scope on character is astounding. It does have the idealistic air that is common in anime that often softens the harsh reality, but is nonetheless heartfelt and entertaining.

Its not fluff, so if you're interested, check it out!

  • That sounds vaguely familiar...but I'm thinking of something else.
